The Auckland Law School, International Law Assocation (ILA) and the New Zealand Institute for International Affairs (NZIIA) warmly invite you to the public lecture “New Zealand and the Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty” at the Old Government House Lecture Theatre, University of Auckland.
On 7 July 2017, New Zealand was among 122 states to vote for the adoption of a new Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty. It has taken over 70 years, but with this treaty, the international community has finally outlawed nuclear weapons. However, not one of the 9 states possessing nuclear weapons have engaged in the process – and all of the NATO states, with the exception of the Netherlands, stayed away from negotiations. What does this mean for the treaty? Why was New Zealand such a strong supporter of this process? What does the future look like now? Join Lyndon and Treasa, both of whom were at the negotiations in New York, to hear their thoughts and reactions.
